For regular users this may not be for you but for those who want the ultimate data protection, the D300S is a worthy investment.Kingston Digital Europe Co LLP, the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., a world leader in memory products and technology solutions, announced its IronKey™ D300 Encrypted USB Flash Drive series has achieved NATO Restricted Level Certification. It's not cheap either, the D300S costs a pretty penny, the 128GB variant is $250. That's the nature of the beast and it makes sure that your data is secure. If you do forget the password however, there's no way to recover the data and the only way is to hard format and lose all the data. I transferred 4K video footage with relative ease and plugging it in, required a password and of course there's a hint feature in case you forget it. My only gripe, is that the cap of the drive, could have had an attachment to keep it on the drive through an iron or metal loop.

The drive is manufactured using a rugged zinc casing and its waterproof up to 4 feet. There also needs to be physical or logical separation between the interfaces by which "critical security parameters" enter and leave the module. The Level 3 certification required Kingston to meet certain physical anti-tamper resistance and evidence requirements as well as enable role-based authentication.

Fairly standard but the security on the memory drive is what this is all about.Īccording to Kingston, it uses 256-bit AES-XTS for encryption and the D300S is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified, meaning it's been formally validated by the US government and NATO for effectiveness as a piece of cryptographic hardware. It's a USB 3.1 drive and ranges from 4GB to 128GB configurations with up to 250MB/s read and 85MB/s write speeds. Think of this as a memory drive for those working in architecture, military and corporate companies handling schematics. The IronKey D300S was designed as a portable storage solution for sensitive data. Plugging in the Ironkey loads up a a “CD” image and requires an encryption password to see the files inside.
